Project Overview

Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine renovation / expansion project included two phases.

Phase 1 entailed a main entrance fit-out and fan coil installation to support 63,000 sf of existing infrastructure for heat and air conditioning.

Phase 2 involved a u-shaped seven-story addition on the west front-side of the building and a two-story addition on the north side. The two new additions added 48,000 sf increasing the buildings overall space by 49 percent.

The During construction, the treatment centers remained open to for patients which required some faculty, staff, and students to relocate within the building to avoid work crews.

CMNE fabricated a snow melt system to maintain safe passage at entryways and walkways. The heat exchanger and pump set were created on steel frames so assembly and rigging into position was simplifyed. When snow or ice is detected through in-ground sensors, it heats the affected surface using piping that is embedded  in the concrete. A chemical liquid then circulates through the piping and melts the areas.

CMNE handled the HVAC scope of the project which included:

  • Upgrades to the basement mechanical room with hydronic and steam systems
  • Chiller plant upgrades
  • Fan coil systems
  • Exhaust fan systems
  • Installation of rooftop HVAC infrastructure for the new seven-story addition
  • Steam/hot water system upgrades
  • Fuel oil systems for the emergency generator
  • Life-safety systems
  • New dedicated outdoor-air unit with distribution systems
